Touching the Horizons--Chitkul-Sangla

Very informative article. We are planning 9 day biking trip to Sangla in April. DO you think it will be very cold there. What about the roads. Are they good enough to drive down.

The Shaming of Fiona: Part II

I will do what I want. There ought to be no societal code or moral compass. I will not be judged. I will not be held responsible for anything. But if I were to attract danger in an imperfect world, I shall blame anybody and everybody for not being responsible for me.

Not just woolly-headed liberals most urban youth today, suffering from acute self-confidence seeks to be outstandingly cool and different and liberal and free from societal bonds, so to say, and blame it on the rest of the world and its wives if things don't work out the way they expected.
Forget about tourists, anybody across cultures, society and countries if they are living by the above said norm, then all they need is a good spanking and shock treatment to tell them "Grow Up and stop throwing tantrums."

Preventing child sexual abuse...

Really good info you have put it. The studies reveal that most child abuse happens at home and by trusted people. Almost every other girl or boy has faced it in their childhood.

The Shaming of Fiona: Part I

every child at some point in his/her life pays or enjoys the seeds which their parents have sown. Whether it is good or bad is on the parents shoulders. That is why we say that parenting it the toughest job on earth as it has no manuals and no awards. Unfortunately for our media GOA became a scapegoat. Goa is once again giving out ads for GOAFEST, a time when all advertising agency people reward each other. In one such award function, Alyque Padamsee had shared an unique ad on parenting.

All it showed is a child's face. A man's hand on the right combed the hair and put a moustache which made the child look like Hitler, and a woman's hand on the left added the accesories to make the same child tranform with little changes and look like Charlie Chaplin.

The msg was simple -- Its upto you how you bring up your child. Either you teach them to take risks and be responsibly taking them and keep the safety guards on  OR you teach them to live life wildly, abuse their own bodies and their souls.

Life is an adventure, you can jump off cliffs or planes. But if you wan't yourself safe you need to keep the safety kit on. In case of a society, the safety net is provide by the family and parents till the child is grown up enough to take care on his own. Beyond that he is responsible for the consequenses of his actions. SO long as the victim is a child, it is quiet natural for the parents to be blamed for being careless or to liberal.

If Fiona gave her daughter the liberty to lead a bohemian life and sleep with strangers like JULIO, then she has no right to scream at the consequences. Forget about rape or muder, did she even think about AIDS? Whom would she blame if that guy infected her daughter? Could she blame the indain police or the GOA administration?

Being "stoned, licentious, sluttish, stupid but voluptuous" does not mean she can be easy prey for rape.... but the fact that she trusted the wrong people, left her defeseless daughter with them unattended for a long period of time overnight, generally gave out the msg to the perpetrators that these people are easy. The girl is available and the mother doesn't give a dime for what she does. Perhaps the guy didn't intend to rape, only thought she was easy as she was sleeping with some other men. Then when she refused, his criminal side surfaced.

One can't read the criminal intentions of a man written on his face. One can only be cautious.
Our safety is in our own hands. Police will only come after the crime has been committed. Or does fiona want that in GOA there should one policeman for each tourist?

Another Sense

We are all so afraid to die... (physically) that ....  we have doused the little bofires inside us... and don't let discussions on sensitive subjects...  even cast a shadow around the corners of our soul... afraid to be caught... afraid to loose or comfortable life. Sometimes we douse truth and sometimes we even douse our conscience... so we are more dead than the dead people you see. Afraid that if we exhale our deepest desire.. more often than not... we won't be able inhale again. But your thought stand out as an inspiration for like minded people. thanks for sharing a wonderful experience
